Weather in Italy

When you look at a globe, you’ll notice that Italy is not an enormous country. It does, however, have a diversity of terrain that lends itself to varied weather conditions – not to mention the fact that it goes from coastline to mountain peaks and back to coastline in a relatively narrow bit of land. In other words, the weather in Italy can fluctuate quite a bit from tip to toe and even from one minute to the next.

There are, of course, generalizations you can make when you begin planning an Italy trip – summer in Italy will be hot, and winter will be cold. When you get closer to your deprature date, however, it’s a good idea to look up current forecasts for the individual cities on your itinerary. That way you’ll know if any part of the country is experiencing an unseasonably warm or cold season, or if you should pack sunglasses or an umbrella (or both).

I think the meteo.it site breakdown of weather by region (in Italian) is good, since you can get more specific information for just the places you’ll be going. Click on each region for details. The descriptions are in Italian, but scroll down to see temperatures (remember, they’re in Celsius!), wind (vento), humidity (umidità), etc. for individual cities in that region.

To at least get you started on some weather information for trip planning, here are the seasonal averages for three Italian cities in different parts of the country. Temperatures are listed in both Fahrenheit and Celsius below.

Don’t forget to consult my calendar of Italian festivals and holidays in conjunction with this weather chart, so you know what will be going on when you’re in Italy!
